Osteoarthropathy refers to any condition affecting the bones and joints. Hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is characterized by clubbing and periostitis of the small hand joints, particularly the distal interphalangeal and metacarpophalangeal joints. A long bone distal extension is common, as are painful, swollen joints and synovial villous proliferation. The condition can occur on its own (primary) or as a result of other diseases, such as lung cancer.
